خرید کتاب دود سیگار Moth Smoke ، اين رمان نخست در سال 2000 به چاپ رسيد و نويسنده سرشناس Jhumpa Lahiri روايت و زبان اين رمان را هم سنگ و هم تراز رمان The Great Gatsby برشمرده است.اين رمان بازگو کننده داستان Darashikoh Shezad بانکداري در لاهور پاکستان است. وقتي Shezad از بانک اخراج مي شود، به سرعت سير نزولي را طي کرده و همه چيز خود را از دست مي دهد.

او خيلي زود عاشق همسر دوست صميمي اش مي شود و همين اتفاق، زندگي اش را دگرگون ساخته و او را در جرم و جنايت و مواد مخدر غوطه ور مي سازد. اما او از آنجاييکه قادر نيست سرنوشتش را عوض کند، با همدست خود Murad Badshah دست به سرقت برنامه ريزي شده اي مي زنند، اما سرآخر همه چيز برملا شده و Shezad دستگير مي شود

و به جرم قتلي که معلوم نيست او مرتکب شده است، محاکمه مي شود…. اين داستان از محاکمه تاريخي Dara Shikoh شاهزاده گورکاني توسط برادرش Aurangzeb کمک گرفته است تا تمثيلي باشد از آزمايش هاي هسته اي سال 1998 در پاکستان.

The novel was first published in 2000, and well-known author Jhumpa Lahiri describes the narrative and language of the novel as both stone and equal to The Great Gatsby. When Shezad is fired from the bank, he quickly goes downhill and loses everything.

He soon falls in love with his best friend’s wife, and this event changes his life and immerses him in crime and drugs. Unable to change his fate, he and his accomplice Murad Badshah carry out a planned robbery, but in the end everything is revealed and Shezad is arrested.

He will be tried for a murder for which it is not known that he committed it…. The story draws on the historic trial of Prince Gurkhani’s Dara Shikoh by his brother Aurangzeb as an allegory of the 1998 nuclear test in Pakistan.
